Ilocos
Sur marked the beginning of our Holy Week
adventures.
Alia,
Ellen, Joseph, and I ventured into the historical
world of Vigan, without knowing anything much
about it. Nova, whose originally from Candon, was
suppose to be with us, but she was left in Manila
still doing some production work.
As
soon as the 4 of us got off the bus, we
commissioned a tricycle driver to roam around
Vigan so we can look for a place to stay. Since we
arrived in Vigan on a Maundy Thursday, naturally,
most of the accommodations were already occupied.
There were some that were still vacant but we
couldn't afford the rate. Good thing our tricycle
driver was sympathetic to us and continued driving
all over Vigan until we can find a place to stay.
He finally brought us to La Fernandina Hotel that
had one last room available near the basement. It
fitted our budget.
The
rest of the day was spent at the Plaza Burgos,
pigging out.
The
next day, we decided to look into the antique
shops and houses along Plaridel Street. After
that, we went to the belfry of St. Paul's
Metropolitan Cathedral, which was about 15 meters
away from the church. From the belfry, we could
see the white tombstones in the Vigan Cemetery. We
decided to drop by the cemetery for some picture
taking. By late afternoon, we were back at the
Plaza Burgos, pigging ourselves out with Chicken
Empanada with egg after hearing the Good Friday
Mass in the Cathedral.
Black
Saturday was spent roaming throughout Vigan. We
went to different hotels and inns and inquired
about their rates, for future references. We also
went to the Aniceto Mansion, Arzobispado and back
to the St. Paul's Metropolitan Cathedral for
picture taking. Next, we boarded a local bus bound
for Sta. Maria to go to the Pinsal Falls.
In
Sta. Maria, we saw an old church atop a hill with
a stone stairway leading to it. It was such a
great sight, we decided to go inside the church
and up to the belfry. We also went to the ruins of
the old church which was several meters away from
the back of the Sta. Maria Church. By the time we
got back to the plaza, we were so tired, we rested
for awhile near a sari-sari store.
We
asked the lady from the sari-sari store for the
directions going to Pinsal Falls. We were
disappointed when she told us that it might take
an hour or two for us to get there. We still had
to trek in the forest before we can reach the
falls. It was also not advisable to go there
during that time (it was late afternoon) as we
might not be able to find our way back to the
plaza. It would be dark soon, she said. With
nothing else to do, we went back to to Vigan
gravely disappointed.
The
next day, we finally went back to
Manila.
